Funny stuff on the horizon

This fall has begun well!. First Audio Alliance sent us some  conceptsounds then we started redesigning the site together with UI experts and Web designers Tobias Brandt from Digitas and Patrik Åkerman von Knorring from Supernative. We get on really well, they all like and connect with our project. Hopefully we'll be able to present you with a much more streamlined site within the month. The encoding will still be made by our very own multitalent Kami. Be sure to help them out by submitting your ideas and feedback on our site. Preferably here.

Tomorrow Anders & I will meet 100 students at Hyper Island who will as a part of their kick off-boot camp discuss solutions and ideas for our project. Needless to say  we are all superhappy about it! (and somewhat nervous, talking in front of 100 people Jeez! Anders the little professor will enjoy it though I'm sure:)

Hey what happened to the font...?

Long overdue first video blog

At last I managed to get my shit together. I actually don't like being in front of the camera, I get all self conscious and can't concentrate. At the same time I really like other people's video blogs and I think it should be a vital part of a site like this so I'll just have to get use to it I guess. Besides it may be good for me, a  "therapeutic" exercise in not being in control. We joked about control me and Jonathan once and concluded that it's better to do something flawed than nothing perfect. Don't you agree? It's easy to get stuck on your ass thinking about all the things that has to be just right in order to make it worthwhile to shoot. Woody Allen says somewhere that it's hard being a director with a vision when each morning  on the set a truck pulls up full of fresh compromises. Anyway I hope the only thing you'll notice in the blog is that there are a couple of censuring-edits and also I ramble a bit. (contest - how many times do I say the word "Sequence" in this clip? First to get it right wins something... don't know what yet, I'll find something)  I briefly talk about how j and I work with scripts, we use something J picked up at the Maurits Binger Film Institute years ago called the sequence approach (more here, good book here). I know there are millions of approaches to great writing but this is one that suits us. Next up for me is to finish the other sequences and upload them on the forum. Then I'll make a new viddybloggythingy answering some of the questions I get about the script so far. I feel really good about this fall. The last two weeks have been filled with water-leaks and refurbishing in my small office. Now I'm all yours!! Let's get going!

Technology Summary: Preparing for battle

After impressively having survived more than a month without technical maintenance I felt the infrastructure behind ThePactProject needed some love and caring. It's also time to evaluate what kind of pressure it will withstand and how to improve performance related user experience. A number of updates has been applied and I've finally dared to turn on most of the cache optimizations in the Drupal content management system. Also I've gotten rid of all the pointless services enabled by default on the Ubuntu operating system, freeing up resources. And I also managed to talk our server provider to give us some additional memory for free, which I immediately handed over to the MySQL database system that stores all of the actual content. There's also possibilities of continuing performance improvements if needed including switching over to the much lighter (but also much less mature) nginx web server software, and thereby delaying costly hosting upgrades.

This should prepare us for the coming community building effort this fall. Bring it on!

In depth analysis

You've all probably wondered what I look like and here's a chance to find out! Enjoy... / Anders

Back in town, gearing up for Haugesund

Summer is over, autumn is here and the responsibilities are mounting up - that feels nice.

Today Anders, Henrik and myself had a "after the summer"-meeting where we talked about what has happened during the summer when we all been separated, at least physically. Henrik told us some more about his experiences at the "politikervecka" in Almedalen, (which I'm looking forward to some post about, Henrik!), and we generally discussed what should happen in the near future. Several interesting collaborations are on their way!

One nice site that Henrik brought to our attention was Plotbot, a web-based screenwriting software, that are exactly the kind of app that would be nice to intergrate into this site.

Next week I'm going to The Norwegian International Film Festival in Haugesund. There they have the annual Nordic Co-Production and Film Financing Forum. The forum's focus this year is on co-productions with Germany, France, Canada and the Nordic countries. Canada!! That's right up our alley, so I'm going there! There is a possibility to pitch projects at the forum, but you need a certain amount of financing in place etc to do that - so I'm going as an observer. I hope to get some input on how to move on with the contact towards the (other) big country in the west, and hopefully meet some interesting people.

At least this what I had in mind when I booked the flight. Now the other day I got the schedule and participant's list, and I'm no longer so certain visavi the possibilities. There is one (1) point in the program about Canada (30 minutes long), and I find one (1) in the participant's list from Canada.
But then again, maybe a lot of Canadians are hiding under .com-adresses and people say Haugesund is a great festival to visit - so I'm not really worried.

I'll tell you about it when I'm back.

Happy Weekend

Finally - I watched all of Twin Peaks!

I didn't watch Twin Peaks when it first ran on Swedish television. I must have been like, 13 at the time. I just wasn't clever enough. My favourite shows at the time was the British comedy show 'Allo 'Allo about a fat French chef and the chicks who adored him. I also liked Married With Children and a few other series but not Twin Peaks. The other kids talked about it but I never got it. I think I saw part of one of the episodes and of course didn't understand a thing.

But now I have seen the show and am a better person for it. It is amazing and unrivalled. A am especially happy about the wonderful ending. The Black Lodge is such a mysterious and scary place. Imagine that it is just curtains, lighting and a few actors with white contact lenses. It's just great.

Lynch never goes out of style that's for sure. Go ahead and check out his most recent work, the more down to earth Interview-project:

There are a lot of cool Lynch influenced remixes out there as well. Here's one:

We're so JFK!

I have yet to receive any negative comments on our project, everybody is remarkably supportive. But before I went to a seminar on future business models for music, film and art the other week I asked PerProducer on how I should respond if I met any negativity. We both think we soon will meet some "traditionalists" who think we are doing this project for some kind of "easy publicity" or even more ignorant "easy money". Per's answer made me feel proud and happy. He simply said that we are pioneers and that there is no sign that this process on "crowding"  everything will be easier than traditional film financing  and production.  Rather the opposite. This is unknown territory for all and as all firsts this journey will be tough. There is no doubt that finding, meeting and interacting with one's audience is a technique here to stay in some shape or form. Our take in exploring this is to put an entire feature film production from start to finish out on this site and gauge the reactions on what functionalities and services we offer. Then we change the site accordingly until we get it right. Right now we're all on holiday, the site is up for all to see and we are slowly filling it with content, learning as we go along. In August  I will add lots of stuff on the story and the script at the same time as we will review the site structure and design and we will contact all possible horror buffs and friends in the US and around the world. So be sure to tell us what you'd like to see. There is a forum topic for this here. This fall promises lots and lots of hard but exhilarating work. So much fun I can't wait! Back to PerProducer, paraphrasing ol' JFK:  we are making our horror movie on this site, open for all, together with our future audience, not because it is easy but because it is hard. Take a look.   Our project kind of shrinks in comparison to going to the moon or stopping global warming but nevertheless - we are all pioneers:-)

Alright Gotta Go...!!  talk to you soon.

Holiday Shopping

I’m no shopping freak. I buy clothes seldom and efficient. In three hours I’m all set for two years, honestly.  I like the clothes I buy and all, but the process of fitting and choosing, what looks good etc it’s so, I don’t know… arbitrary. But there’s one shopping that I like and of course it’s technology. This project has provided me with some great excuses for shopping. Stuff we need that also are great fun, I’ve started to check off items on my shoppinglist.

1 Small HD-camcorder (Check - Canon HG21)

2 Adobe Master Collection (Check – Thank you Adobe)

3 Audio Interface

If you read my blog from Cannes you recall my frustration with slow internet. Well history repeats itself, now I’m with my family on holiday on the Swedish west coast and the connections SUCK! This project hinges on us linking to all of our supporters, fans and inspirations which calls for some surfing when I blog. I guess my shoppinglist just grew longer.

5 Fast, reliable mobile internet

Anyway, I bought the Camcorder last week and I love it. It’s of course a consumer camera one CCD, not many manual switches all controls inside menus etc but stil it’s great. Fantastic quality both video and audio and syncs well with my mac. I’m gonna add to it a bigger battery, a wide angel converter and two small interview microphones with a XLR-converter and then we’re laughing. Looking forward to showing you what it can do.

Adobe has been indispensible for my filmmaking for as long as I can remember. After Effects and Photoshop, how did we ever make movies without them? (don’t get me started though, I’m old enough to actually have made my first shorts on 16 and 35 mm phew..) Adobe graciously supported our project with a copy of their Master Collection, so now I have to learn Premiere and already I’ve gotten fond of  Soundbooth and Indesign. Thank you! You forwardthinking multinational corporation youJ

My pickypicky companion Anders Sjöman was kind enough to let me know that he hates it when I end my blogposts with a “gotta go”. Well I'm sorry mr writingtalent But it’s true… I have yet to master this beautiful art of blogging and it takes me ages to write and so far I invariably get pressed for time. I hope it rains tomorrow, then instead of going to the beach we can go to the fantastic library in Halmstad where I can get some decent wifi and at least add links to this limp piece of blog entry. Also I want to talk more about After Effects features and why I hate my current audio interface. Maybe I should start a tech forum topic? Also I want to talk more about the script and my ideas for the site, I have to get organizizied (quiz, what 1976 film? ) Well big kiss talk to you tomorrow.

The fat girl!

Oh, I see I didn't supply the link to FFC's quote about the transformation of the movie business, it's here.

And no, FFC is maybe not the authority on how film making will change, but he sure made an effort to be in the forefront of the way films are made in the 70's. Required reading is of course Peter Biskind's "Easy Riders, Raging Bulls", and the two books by/about my idol Walter Murch who was in charge of picture- and sound editing on several of FFC's films. Those books are, "The conversations, Walter Murch and the art of editing" by Michael Ondaatje and "In the blink of an eye", by the man himself.

Have a nice read!
