Etherwaves

In the keel water of the Google Wave fiasco it is becoming clear that popular co-writing service etherpad.com will be opensourced before it is terminated. Good news indeed, on that day we should have a great candidate for a collaborative manuscript editor to integrate seamlessly with ThePactProject.

Pact Alert!

I've set up an rss feed over at Google Alerts that enables you to subscribe in near real time to a flow of articles about ThePactProject as they are indexed by Google's bots. This is a good way of monitoring whatever mentions we get elsewhere on the web.

Just add this link to you'r rss reader, or employ Google Alerts for all your purposes–it's availble by email as well.

(Note: Currently it contains only stuff from our own site, I've since added a filter to exclude that.)

Technology Summary: Preparing for battle

After impressively having survived more than a month without technical maintenance I felt the infrastructure behind ThePactProject needed some love and caring. It's also time to evaluate what kind of pressure it will withstand and how to improve performance related user experience. A number of updates has been applied and I've finally dared to turn on most of the cache optimizations in the Drupal content management system. Also I've gotten rid of all the pointless services enabled by default on the Ubuntu operating system, freeing up resources. And I also managed to talk our server provider to give us some additional memory for free, which I immediately handed over to the MySQL database system that stores all of the actual content. There's also possibilities of continuing performance improvements if needed including switching over to the much lighter (but also much less mature) nginx web server software, and thereby delaying costly hosting upgrades.

This should prepare us for the coming community building effort this fall. Bring it on!

MEDEA Grants ThePactProject Research Funding

ThePactProject is proud to announce that it has today received initial funding for the MEDEA (site, blog) research program at Malmö University. The program aims for co-production in collaborative new media, creating new initiatives for exchange between industry and the research community.

From the statement:

"Upon assessing the applications we focused on the following:

  • potential
  • realism
  • effectiveness

We were able to provide funding for ten applications and in stiff competition the board has decided to endorse your application!"

ThePactProject celebrates this decision and expects this to be the starting point for a long and rewarding cooperation. We will return shortly with our plans.

Add to this

Quite importantly the site now features a social bookmarking function. There's been a range of services to choose from: Add this, Add to any, Share this, Tell a friend and other permutations. Anyway, the benefits they all have in common is to allow users to spread the word on content that we put up, one-to-one or one-to-many using their own social networks and whatever means of communication are in their comfort zone.
